The cat,
only the cat,
appears complete
and proud:
was born completely finished,
walks alone and knows what he wants.
Pablo Neruda en su Oda al Gato.
If you were born in the 1950s and 60s, you will undoubtedly remember “Don Gato y su pandilla”, a 30-episode series created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the iconic American television cartoon producers.
Its original English title was Top Cat and aired on ABC between 1961 and 1962.
The series came to Mexico years later. It was an immediate success thanks to its extraordinary dubbing in Spanish and the Latin names and nicknames of the characters, with which Mexicans identified their neighborhood friends: Don Gato, leader of the gang, Benito Bodoque, Cucho, Demóstenes, Espanto, Panza, and Officer Matute, a policeman who persecutes and reprimands them for their irreverent acts on the streets of Manhattan, New York City.
In 2011 a feature film based on the original series was released, made with 3D animation technique. It was a Mexico-Argentina co-production with the participation of Anima Estudios, Illusion Studios, and Warner Bros. Pictures Mexico.
